The Story Behind
South Texas Equality Project (STEP) creates spaces & collaborations to celebrate, support, educate, & advocate for LGBTQIA+ & other marginalized communities in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.

Founded in 2014, by four member organizations, STEP has since grown to include participation from over 40 STEP Up Coalition organizations & many more individuals. Throughout the year, STEP hosts educational forums, support groups, fundraisers, social meetups, book clubs, town halls and other events for the benefit of the LGBTQIA+ community. We also host monthly coalition meetings open to any member of the community and our allies where we address issues confronting the community, brainstorm ways to uplift the community, and discuss ongoing and upcoming projects. STEP works with local media sources to educate them and expand the narrative around sexuality and gender diversity in the Rio Grande Valley.

One of STEP's most important events is our annual Pride celebration. Previously known as Pride in the Park and now rebranded as RGV Pride, this multifaceted annual celebration includes educational workshops on various aspects of LGBTQIA+ Latinx culture, community, and identity. The annual celebration includes social meetups aimed at including different identities within the community, a resource fair highlighting LGBTQIA+-affirming service providers and local businesses, and entertainment shows featuring local performers. Pride is an important opportunity to celebrate our community and also provides LGBTQIA+ people of all ages a chance to connect, find community, and learn more about resources.
